Acute kidney injury (AKI) is the abrupt loss of kidney function defined by a rapid (over hours to days) decline in the glomerular filtration rate (GFR) resulting in the retention of metabolic nitrogenous waste products and dysregulation of fluid, electrolyte, and acid-base homeostasis [1]. In 2002, the Acute Dialysis Quality Initiative (ADQI) Group proposed the first
consensus definition of AKI.
