The impact factor (IF) is used to measure the importance of a journal by calculating the number of times selected articles are cited within the last few years. The value of impact factor depends on citations and publications in a year.Impact factor can be calculated only after completing the minimum of 2-3 years of publication and cannot be calculated for new journals. The journal gets the highest IF only when there have published the most commonly cited articles over a 2-year period. A journal which publishes more articles and cited more in a year will get highest IFs.
If the Journal has a higher impact factor, then the journal will be highly ranked. It is one tool you can use to compare with the other journals in a same subject category. Journals with higher IFs believed to be more important than those with lower ones.
It is used as an indicator and gives us the importance of a journal within its field and measure the quality and rank of a journal.
